VMHA Youth Group       By Brittany Collins

The Vermont Morgan Horse Association Youth have participated in many different events throughout the 2005-year.  At most of the events, we were there to lend a hand.  The youth group’s main focus is to expand the learning of the Morgan Horse, while being able to hang out with friends that have similar interests.  Below are most of the events that the youth participated in:

The Equine Affaire is a large event in November where all different breeds of horses gather.  Many members of VMHA donated their time to help support the Morgan horse, including the youth members.  There were three stalls filled with stylish Morgans along with the promotional booth.

The Spring Clinic at Cedar Spring Farm was the next event on the calendar.  Bonnie, Keely, and Wendy all did a fantastic job that demonstrated how to care for the older horse and what makes a pair a pair.  Molly and Megan Harvey, Stephanie Henderson, Jessica Sanderson, Ariel Blackett and myself were there selling hot drinks and baked goods.  We also assisted in setting up the promotional booth and chairs for spectators.

Everything Equine was the second annual event held at the Champlain Valley Exposition.  VMHA and AMHA had very attractive promotional booths side by side that significantly supported the Morgan horse.  Molly and Megan Harvey, Stephanie Henderson, Ariel Blackett and myself were there helping to set up and manage the booth.

UVM invited the youth group to a clinic that was about preparing for the Youth of the Year competitions, specifying on the horsemanship riding patterns.  At this event, we were able to bring our horses and ride the pattern.  Steve coached us along through the pattern and gave us constructive criticism and skills that should be practiced.  Ariel Blackett and her gelding Heyday Rising Sun, Victoria Brown and her Cousin Nicole brought there two horses, Betsy Coco and her horse, and myself and Mettowee Mic Mac Chief all went to UVM to practice our patterns and to prepare for the youth competitions.

The Vermont Spring Classic Morgan Horse Show was the event that followed.  At this event a few of the VMHA youth went down to compete, as well as to help with the promotional booth.  A few of the members competed In the Youth of the Year competition and did very well.

The Showcase of Agriculture was a really fun event that focused solely on the Morgan breed.  Members of the youth group gave demonstrations, as well as preparing food for the spectators, which all profits were donated to the National Museum of the Morgan Horse.

Heritage Days was a very fun and successful show for all of the youth members.  The youth got together and had a study hour on Friday night to help prepare for the youth competition, in addition to practicing the riding patterns.  We also helped with the promotional booth and the carriage driving show.

At the Champlain Valley Fair this year, we had two stalls filled with Morgan horses, along with the promotional booth.  The several days that I was there, I went out on the mound with a horse and talked about the Morgan breed and what my involvement is.  Ariel Blackett also came and helped with the promotion booth.

A couple ongoing projects that the youth were involved in over the course of the year was the stallion service auction project, which helps promote the stallions of the VMHA stallion service auction.  The stallions that the youth were able to see were Tedwin Titlist, Long View Sundance, all of the UVM stallions and some of us were able to see Heyday Independence at the Connecticut show.  The other project the youth has been working on is the Horsemanship Achievement Program, which allows us to gain badges for the levels of knowledge of the Morgan Breed.
