Field and Forest Products' Shiitake mushroom outdoor log kit is great for any mushroom enthusiast. Plants a total of five dormant cut green hardwood logs (Oak, Ironwood, Sugar Maple, and Beech work best). Log diameter should be 4-6" with a length of about 40" (logs are not included). Drill holes around the log in the recommended pattern, hammer in the include plug spawn (wood dowels containing mushroom mycelium or "roots") and wax over the sites. Instructions included. Once planted the logs should be placed in a shaded location protected from the wind. Logs will require watering from time to time, and in about one year the mushrooms will bloom. Logs are planted only one time and will produce for many years!
